Family-centered home, water, and hospital birth care across Central Florida — rooted in faith, true informed consent, and truly knowing the women I serve.

Hi, I'm Rhonda

Guardian Midwifery is my solo practice. I have been serving families in Central Florida since 2004 — first as a birth doula, childbirth educator, and lactation consultant, and as a Florida Licensed Midwife since 2015.

Since being called into birth work in 2003, I have continually pursued education to serve families to the best of my ability. I trained and certified as a DONA birth doula, a Certified Lactation Counselor through the Center for Breastfeeding, and a childbirth educator through Advanced Birthing Concepts and the HypnoBirthing Institute. After working alongside a well-known Central Florida midwife who sparked my love for prenatal care, I graduated from the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery in Gainesville in 2015.

Licensed Midwife Serving since 2004 Faith-Centered Care

I believe that birth is a normal, physiological function of a woman's body. I provide family-centered maternity care with a relational approach, prioritizing true informed consent so that each family feels seen, heard, and respected — caring for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of every client. Every family I serve becomes part of my heart, and it is my honor to walk with you through this sacred season — offering steady hands, an open heart, and unhurried, personal care from your first visit through your tender postpartum weeks.

— Rhonda Huggins, Licensed Midwife (LM)

Birth is not only about making babies. It's about making mothers — strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and believe in their inner strength.

Why Families Choose Guardian

The Guardian Difference

In Her Words

Midwifery is…

Midwifery is so much more than prenatal visits, lab work, and blood pressure checks.

It's knowing my clients as people — their fears and doubts, their strengths, their dreams, and the burdens they quietly carry. It's understanding that what happens at home or at work doesn't stay there; it follows them into pregnancy and deserves space, compassion, and care.

It's praying for them when they need strength, celebrating with them when life is good, laughing together often, and sometimes crying together too.

Midwifery is deeply professional, yet profoundly personal. It is built on relationship, trust, and the privilege of walking alongside women during one of the most transformative seasons of their lives.

Caring for mothers has never been just about babies for me. It's about serving the whole person.

And I can't imagine doing anything else.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to start midwifery care?

The sooner the better! Many families reach out as soon as they learn they're expecting. Starting early lets us build a relationship, begin your prenatal care on time, and make sure I have space for your due date — though I welcome transfers of care later in pregnancy too. Just reach out and we'll talk.

Do you serve my area?

I care for families across Orange, Seminole, Volusia, and parts of Lake County — the greater Orlando, Sanford, DeBary, and Altamonte Springs areas. Not sure if you're in range? Just reach out and ask.

Where do prenatal visits take place?

I see clients at my two Central Florida offices — in DeBary and in Altamonte Springs. Your birth then takes place in the comfort of your own home, or your chosen hospital.

Can I bring my kids or partner to my visits?

Absolutely. Guardian Midwifery is family-centered care — your partner, children, and support people are always welcome at your prenatal visits and at your birth.

Can I have a home birth — or do you support hospital births too?

Both. I offer home birth, water birth, and prenatal care with a planned hospital delivery — whichever best fits your family and your wishes.

How do water births work?

For a water birth, you labor and/or birth in a warm birth pool set up in your home. The warm water helps you relax, eases the intensity of contractions, and offers a gentle welcome for your baby. We'll talk through whether it's a good fit for you and how to prepare.

What if I don't want a natural birth?

Midwifery care centers on physiologic, unmedicated birth, which is what I'm trained and licensed to support at home. If you're hoping for an epidural or a medicated hospital birth, I can still provide your prenatal care with a planned hospital delivery, or help point you toward the right provider — my goal is always to help you make the choice that's right for you.

Do I still need to see an OB?

For a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, I provide your complete prenatal care and there's usually no need to also see an OB. If anything comes up that calls for additional care, I'll help coordinate a referral and consult or collaborate with a physician as needed.

What safety measures are in place during birth?

Your safety and your baby's are my highest priority. I carry emergency equipment and medications to every birth, monitor you and baby closely throughout labor, and am trained to respond to emergencies. If a situation ever calls for a higher level of care, I have clear plans in place for a smooth transfer to the hospital.

How long have you been a midwife?

I've been in birth work since 2003 and a Florida Licensed Midwife since 2015, after graduating from the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery in Gainesville.

What is your approach to care?

Relational and unhurried. I prioritize true informed consent and care for the whole person — body, mind, and spirit — so you feel seen, heard, and respected throughout your journey.

What are your religious or spiritual beliefs?

Faith is a meaningful part of my life, and I strive to care for the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. I'm honored to walk alongside families of all backgrounds and to hold space for what is sacred to each one I serve.
